Color affects people in many ways, depending on age, gender, ethnic background and climate. Certain colors (or groups of colors) tend to get a similar reaction from most people; the variations come from the shades or tones used. This is why it’s so important to choose colors wisely when it comes to decorating.
Because much of your wall space tends to be covered by cabinets, backsplashes and appliances, the remaining areas offer a perfect opportunity for a bold accent wall color, without the risk of dominating the room.
This isn’t to say you can’t use a bold stone in a compact kitchen, just that it will feel even more dramatic in scale, meaning you probably will want to keep the other finishes very sedate. Notice how many of these spaces use the same dramatic stone for the counter and the backsplash, making for a truly singular statement.
It's also worth noting that mixing colors of light and paint operate in different ways. With light, this process is additive — combining colored light produces white. With paint or pigment, this process is subtractive — parts of the white light spectrum are absorbed to produce color. Brown, for example, is a color that can only be produced using paint or pigment; combining light cannot. Finally, you should consider lightness and saturation before you select a color for your kitchen. Lightness impacts how bright or dark a color will appear, while saturation governs intensity.
