Like your walls, your backsplash covers just enough area to accommodate a bold accent color. The wide range of backsplash material options also let you enhance that color with different textures and finishes.
Before you head to your local paint supplier and mix up a new kitchen palette, it pays to know a little bit about color theory. The idea got its start with Sir Isaac Newton, who described three primary colors of light — red, green and blue — and developed the color wheel. Colors across from each other on the wheel canceled out when mixed, producing grey, black or white. This bears some similarity to the concept of complementary colors; warm shades such as yellow or orange have complementary cool colors like green or purple, which provide a striking visual look when paired but aren't overwhelming.
Because gray is the most neutral color around, it makes another excellent choice to pair with colorful cabinets, especially in a space with different cabinet finishes, as it can help tie light and dark cabinets together.
But with most appliances offering limited color options (aside from the usual trifecta of white, black and silver), where can you look to infuse some colorful expression into your kitchen? Here are some suggestions.
