Before you head to your local paint supplier and mix up a new kitchen palette, it pays to know a little bit about color theory. The idea got its start with Sir Isaac Newton, who described three primary colors of light — red, green and blue — and developed the color wheel. Colors across from each other on the wheel canceled out when mixed, producing grey, black or white. This bears some similarity to the concept of complementary colors; warm shades such as yellow or orange have complementary cool colors like green or purple, which provide a striking visual look when paired but aren't overwhelming.
Color is the easiest way to turn a kitchen (or indeed any room) around. Pick up a paintbrush and in half a day you can go from drab to fab, or instantly transform the space with accessories and artwork in off-the-radar hues. People often get stuck in a kitchen color rut for some reason, opting for the same old subdued palette of pale neutrals. I’m in the “dare to be different” decorating camp. I’m evangelical about intoxicating, lavish colour—not to be gimmicky or quirky but because it’s the biggest game changer I know.
The designer wanted guests to feel like they could just walk in and hang out in this space. All of the living areas connect, so to avoid cluttering the open floor plan with too many cabinets, almost everything—from flatware to everyday dishes—is well organized and stowed away in drawers. This also makes it easy for guests of all agest to access kitchen essentials.
Walk into your kitchen and you probably know where everything is, from the everyday dishes to the flatware used only on special occasions. Each cabinet is part of a symphony, playing a role in your organized, inviting space. When it’s time for a remodel, you want the new kitchen cabinets to fit seamlessly with your design and with the way you use the space. So, how to choose styles and colors for kitchen cabinets?
